Mathematical Toolkit

The Award Winning Mathematical Toolkit

In collaboration with Intel and The Mathematical Association, the Mathematical Toolkit and Number line have been designed specifically to support the teaching and learning of mathematics in grades 7, 8 and 9. This UK BETT award-winning toolkit is now available for you to download from skoool.co.za

Number line

The Number line tool offers a dynamic environment in which teachers and learners can explore numbers and relationships between them.  In its simplest use, number lines can be created quickly and easily, and the display can be in decimal and/or fractional notation; the numbers can also be hidden. A point on the line, ‘ n', can be dragged along the number line and its exact position revealed as a decimal to a chosen number of decimal places.  Further points can be positioned on the line and the environment will support pupils to make connections between related points on the line and begin to generalise about relationships using simple algebraic rules.

2-D Shapes

This tool allows the teacher or pupil to create 2-D geometric objects such as quadrilaterals, circles, triangles, lines, arcs, ray segments and vectors on a co-ordinate grid of a specified scale.  Once plotted, the vertices can be labelled and the internal angles, side lengths, area and perimeter revealed. Shapes can then be translated, rotated, reflected and enlarged on the co-ordinate grid using the transformation features of the tool. Each time a shape is transformed, a ghost of its previous position is left on the screen supporting the investigation of sequences of transformations.

Coordinates and Graphing

Coordinate graphs can be easily created on a specified set of axes by a mouse click or a tap on an interactive whiteboard. Where it is appropriate, graphs of algebraic functions can be superimposed, encouraging pupils’ conjectures. Up to five colour-coded functions can be plotted on any set of axes and the table of values is displayed alongside the graphs. Still digital images and video clips can be imported as a background onto which coordinate points can be plotted and relationships investigated. Used in this way, real images and videos can be explored and connections made between the shape and the mathematical function that shares that shape.

Charting

The charting tool enables lists of data to be input and a range of statistical graphs plotted, including bar graphs, pie charts, box and whisker plots and scatter graphs. The summary statistics can also be displayed.

Technical Requirements:

  • Intel® Pentium 4 2.2+ Processor
  • 256 MB RAM
  • Your PC must be running Windows XP (Home or Professional edition) as its operating system.
  • You must have Internet Explorer selected as your default web browser, and any pop-up blocker must be switched off for this application.
  • If you are running Windows XP, you must be a Power User or Administrator on your PC in order to install the toolkits.
